The Tooth Fairy and other Mythical Creatures

Chasie Racie lost his first tooth Tuesday night – here is what followed:

Chase: (holding his first lost tooth) Hey, Tooth Fairy give me a $5?

Me: So you think I am the tooth Fairy?
Chase: Yes, and Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny too.
Me: Carter, what do you think?
Cartman: Wait, if you are Santa, how does Santa Tracker work?

Me: (I turn off TV and start paying attention) I don’t know – the Navy is in charge of it I think. (Mr. BP let me know it is the Defense Department)

Cartman: Oh, they are tracking submarines.

Me: Do you know how we started gift giving at Christmas?

Boo: The elves!

Cartman: The three dwarfs.

Chase: You idiot, it is seven dwarfs.

Me: We don’t say idiot.  No, it is the three wise men bearing gifts. Caden, what do you think?

Boo: I think it is 50/50 you.  Why do we leave cookies if Santa doesn’t come?
Chase: DAD!

True Story.  The End.

PS I have been struggling about our Christmas practices {a ton of external pressure going on here}.  It is truly one of the seasons I love the most and brings me so much joy.  I would love your feedback on how you balance Santa with your beliefs, etc.

  1. Hi there, I found your blog through The Vintage Farmhouse blog and (! Loved it!)
So I am wondering around the rest.
This post caught my attention b/c we too always struggled with the Santa thing.
We did keep Santa but got rid of the Easter Bunny…that one I couldn't get past.
We told our kiddos that Santa only brought one present and always tried to keep them mindful of the reason for Christmas and for others. They are older now it all worked out. I think you just have to follow what God is trying to tell you to do and don't worry about what anyone else says….
    That's my 2 cents worth…
I am off to discover the rest of your lovely blog!

  2. Sonya@Beyond the Screen Door says:

We always played Santa really low keyed when our kids were little. He was always there in the background. Just not the emphasis. Same with the other mythical creatures. :)
Love conversations like that! Sweet, sweet, sweet! Well, except for the idiot part. I'm still saying things like "we don't say idiot" these days and ALL my kids are 14 and up! LOL!

  3. In an effort to tie our religious beliefs with the secular practices, we decided to to emphasize the history of giving prior to Christ, the purpose of gift giving and the 3 magi, and the history of the original St. Nikolaos of Myra in Turkey who was the inspiration for Santa Claus. So, we would find a charitible opportunity where we could participate as a family, each child would receive 3 gifts under the tree in remembrance of the gifts from the 3 magi, and then each family member would have a special little something for the stocking of the other family members. And, at Christmas dinner our prayer was always one of our kids reading the Christmas story from the Bible. We BELIEVE in Santa Claus and the Easter bunny still visits – and have been doing this as a family for 25+ years. Always managed to tie in the secular symbols and practices to their religious origins.
