Pinterest Problems

Yesterday I had a lot of between time in the minivan – so after I played my Words with Friends (BTW if you are my birth sister, play your word!), answered emails and checked Facebook, I popped over to my Reader app to catch up.

I generally check Addicted 2 Decorating first (she’s first in my list) and I enjoy Kristi’s writing style and amazing projects.  I also love Kristi because when I first started blogging at GGH, some of her advice was so spot on that my GGH blog grew amazingly well the first year (in fact I really miss those numbers and people).  She took the time to email me and guided me through linking and crediting properly so I would be welcomed by other bloggers.

Well, yesterday she was upset about Pinterest.  And after reading her post, I totally got why.

I encourage you to take time to read the first problem with Pinterest but to also go to the second post about why it effects everyone, even non-bloggers.

I put together a little tutorial to help you weed it out.  I cleaned up as many of my boards as possible last night and will continue tonight, this is a before shot:

Do you see the two problems on the top row?  See the spice rack from IKEA?  I actually went to IKEA yesterday and purchased those very spice racks for bookshelves for the bunk room BECAUSE of this photo.  Now, when I blog about the bunk room, I have NO ONE to give credit to – and while I have some great ideas, this was not one of them.

How does it say NONE?  Someone uploaded this from their computer idea files to get them onto their boards and did not know to or take the time to add the right annotation.  The best example of this actually hurting the original creator is linked in Kristi’s original article, but here it is from the House of Hepworth’s.

My new blog is small and my old blog was big to me, but small to the biggies, but I used to link to a ton of parties and there were two projects that I did that started spreading through blog land with never a mention (silver leaf dresser and tutu stage skirt for a playroom).  So, if it can happen to me, it can happen to anyone.  Watermarking photos will be my new hobby.

The photos that say google.com many times went to a page where the photo was “on top of the page” and on the right it gave the original source.  If you clicked the “x” on the photo, you were on the original page.  I tested these, and while I agree that Google doesn’t need more traffic, it does go to the source and I think that is the heart of the issue.  I went back in to mine and added the source link in the comments if it was a re-pin or I deleted the original pin and re-pinned from the page.

The next problem – see the one above on the right?  It says tumblr.com. You have to have a tumblr account  - which I do along with a stumble upon account, but I never ever use them.  If you don’t, you come to a sign in page before you can view the source.

I deleted these pins as well – I can’t reasonably expect everyone who follows me to also have those accounts, so down they come.

How to tell if there is a source?  It literally takes an extra 2 seconds.

Click the pin.

In the upper right hand corner it shows a link – that means it is valid.  If you think it is from a source that is pooling ideas, then you should click twice more to get to the original site to pin from.

Now, it is wishful thinking that everyone will follow these suggestions that Kristi threw out there – but if we all do our part, maybe the ladies (and guys) who work hard to inspire us will get their fair credit.

PS If you think that this takes too long, I have 34 boards and 1082 pins.  I did all but 3 boards last night in 45 minutes.  I scanned each board separately and the ones with problems I either deleted or hunted it down to find the source and fixed it.  I didn’t save it to my computer.  If I use it as inspiration, as a blogger I need to credit the idea.

Thanks! I am new to and totally lost in, but falling in love with pinterest. I may as well start learning about possible glitches like these early.

Fantastic!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you for passing along this info. I agree…not everyone will do this (so many people today seem to have a sense of entitlement that tells them that rules apply to everyone BUT to themselves), but I agree that if all of us who DO actually care will take the few extra seconds to pin responsibly, then our efforts will outweigh the lazy pinners who don't give a care in the world how they're handling other people's property.

I still need to clean up my boards. For the longest, I was just re-pinning away, just assuming that the links were correct. It was only a few days ago that I realized how incorrect my assumption was! Now my boards are a mess!! Thank you for leading the way. I hope to follow your example this weekend.

since you got me into this, you can show me if I'm doing it wrong when I see you! 20 days and counting down! :)

I totally agree! I use Pinterest a LOT for roundups and usually end up being more frustrated because I can never track down the original sources and I can't use the ideas! Thanks for writing this!

    I agree – have found some printables on sites where it's impossible to find the item. Now this could be because of poor UI design and site navigation/linking practices. One of them I remember was Martha Stewart and HP. I think HP actually redesigned their site and the page was a redirect. {{shakes her head and waves finger at the developers}}

The tumblr part I don't understand. If you go to http://starsunflower.tumblr.com/ there's no login page. It's basically like going to you.blogspot.com. Maybe they had the page set to private? They should definitely have linked to the actual post though. Like instead of doing user.tumblr.com use

    user.tumblr.com/post/number/title

Anyways, great post! It's nice to see that other people are thinking about such things. Sometimes I wonder if it's just my *geeky* tendencies that come through when these things come to mind.

    Cheers! Sü

Thanks for this! I'm going to check my boards now.

I try very hard to get to the source even if I have to go to several blogs to get to the original creator. However, sometimes there may not be a source and the none is legit. I made a card and took a picture of it from my ipad while on pinterest. It will post saying…pinned via web from none. That could be the case with some of the other none posts. Since reading your blog I went to my card on pinterest and put that it was made by me and that I took a picture of it. Thanks for the tips on cleaning up pinterest. It really does make things a lot easier when you can find the actual source.

Very good advice, I hate going to do a project from Pinterest and not having anyone to link back to. I feel like a phony, I will go through my boards and fix them. New follower!

I agree there are definitely problems. My new thing with scanning pinterest is to "like" the items as I scan down and then go back to my likes and check the sources etc. and then repin if there is a source and unlike (so my likes don't become out of control) I have that "pin it" button on my toolbar and I usually haven't had a problem. I don't think sometimes people realize they are just pinning the picture.

I'm new to Pinterest and relatively new to blogging, but I noticed this the first time I was on Pinterest. I always try to click through to see the original blog or site where the work was created {but I do see one on mine that I need to correct}. Thank you for posting this. Maybe I missed it, but I didn't see where Pinterest gives these type of directions??

Do you ever have a problem with your pins and likes disappearing. I usually add 20 plus pins a day, but my stats always stay the same 1095 pins 640 likes, and lately when I pin something it shows up on the board 4-6 times. I have sent 2 messages to pinterest with no response. I hope I haven't been wasting my time with a program that doesn't do what it says it will

  14. Connie says:

Have been trying to deactivate or delete my account through the steps given on Pinterest. Profile page “offers” a delete button but it does not work. When clicking on Delete, the profile page rolls back to the top and nothing has been done. I have sent numerous emails to Pinterest email account and the only reply was one stating what was already on the website: go to your profile page, click Delete. I have tried this several times a day for weeks now. I need to disolve this account and perhaps begin again later. Has anyone else had success in deleting their account?

Hi Connie – I wish I could help, but am unsure. If it won’t delete, then I would set it to private. Good luck, Bev
