Ombre Wall Art

Recently I had a very sweet client “commission” me to create some art.  Now, this happened quite by mistake.  I knew what I wanted for her large wall expanse above her mantle – we needed large, we needed colors to specifically tie the colors of her room together, we needed budget friendly.

What we didn’t know is that wasn’t going to be easy to find.

So, I decided to try my hand at ombre wall art.
I started with 4 2′ x 4′ birch boards.

I then chose a color palette based on the elements in the room.

I pushed the boards together to make one board.

Using the palest color I started at the top and just worked left to right in horizontal lines.

Without washing my brush, I would add the next color to the leftover color in my tray (I use leftover Styrofoam trays from fruit).

Then, I kept working down.

To really blend the colors, I would take a very clean, water-wet brush and start at the top and work my way down in broad horizontal strokes.  This really helped to blur the lines of the colors.

There were some weird streaks that showed up during the painting, but once it dried, it all blended in.

I applied a coat of matte Wipe-On Poly.

Here is the large wall we wanted to fill:

It turned out to add just the right touch of color.

While I don’t think I will quit my day job, I was very pleased with how it turned out (as was my client).

It is funny, looking at the pictures, they look so tiny, but that is 8 foot by 4 foot worth of color!

Hope you have a wonderful weekend!
