Fireplace Mantel Makeover

Oh, to love a client who lets me paint their fireplace purple -

The funny thing about this client is that she shares the same name as my favorite client/friend in Florida.  They just spell their name a tiny bit different, but have the same traits of being real and funny and having hearts made of gold.

And now her fireplace also has some gold {and purple}.

Here is the mantle before:

It was lovely, but there was a LOT of brown going on in the room – brown floors, sofas, entertainment center…and it wasn’t highlighting the gorgeous glass tile.

So, a base coat of Behr Vin Rouge – a very plummy and cranberry mix of a color.

I only did one coat of it in an oil base, semi-gloss.  I let a tad of the brown streak through.

I don’t have a close up of this stage, but honestly when I want back a few days after it dried to glaze it, it was already gorgeous.

I glazed it first with burnt umber and a little black .

Then I went back with DecoArt’s Venetian Gold.

Even her manly man of a husband walked in and loved it!

I love when clients are willing to take risks with their finishes and colors.

I say it 1000 times a year it seems like, but I will say it again – it is your home, it is your haven, make it a place you absolutely love.

  1. Pretty gutsy of them to go with purple. It actually looks better than I would have thought.
